Inspired 2022-06-26, Sunday at FOTLR 14, when Gary performed “Sedona” in his concert. Slightly revised 2022-07-16 and 2022-08-14. No third verse seems to be forthcoming.
I know Gary lives in Maryland, two and a half states away from New York, but that’s close enough from the point of view of this Californian: a fraction of the distance between L.A. and San Francisco.

Chorus: Past the Hudson and the Rockies, in the distance, San Francisco.
And far north to Poughkeepsie, next to Montreal’s ice cap.
From the shores of Staten Island to Miami and Jamaica:
The New Yorker’s mental image of the map.

Walking down Fifth Avenue with hotel towers looming down,
Feel the hum of subway cars on course beneath the grassless ground.
Well-paid ad executives and Wall Street brokers knee to knee
Big spenders who fund Hollywood, out West, near Texas and DC.

(Chorus)

City smog, a misty curtain hiding vistas of the west.
Surely no one lives out there, a borough’s worth or two at best.
From the hi-rise heights you may take lifts and stare out in the dark
To see a nation’s streetlights spreading out across from Central Park.

(Chorus)
