They landed by the light of day
In a populous place,
And we knew in a moment
That they were from space.
Real-life First Contact came as a big surprise:
I thought an alien race
Would have three eyes.
And I thought they’d be scaly.
I thought they’d be green.
I didn’t think they’d be slimy
And the shape of a bean.
I thought they’d be brilliant
With an extra-large brain.
But our T.V. attracted them,
So isn’t it plain?
I thought we’d swap artwork,
A great cultural leap,
But their own T.V. programs
Make ours look deep!
They dreamt about us,
And we dreamt about them:
They had glowing fingers,
And they liked M&M’s.
Throw out the films and
Wishes from which they stem:
That’s not a cute E.T.
It looks more like a BEM.
They’re not as barbaric
As they may have looked.
They love little children
When properly cooked.
They like being tourists:
They took in all the sights,
Like the Capitol Building.
They returned it last night.
I thought they’d be little,
Not big as a cow.
But I guess it don’t matter,
’Cause we’re stuck with ’em now!
Do do do do do, do do do do do do.
Ho ho ho ho ho, ho ho hum hum hum.
But they’re not to blame if
They don’t match what one expects.
Not their fault they can’t live up
To our special effects.
